Establishing a consistent routine is crucial for piano practice and musical growth. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced player, having a dedicated routine can make the difference between a small improvement to a more significant improvement.
Regular practice is essential for developing muscle memory, improving technique, and maintaining repertoire. However, in our busy lives, it's easy for piano practice to be pushed aside by other commitments.
Therefore creating and sticking to a routine is very important – it carves out a specific time and space for your musical development, making it a priority rather than an afterthought.
One of my students had a beautiful playlist filled with songs she loved playing regularly. However, as life got busier, she found herself unable to practice consistently. Bit by bit, she lost touch with songs she once cherished.
Her practice routine became challenging when extended family moved in and a new puppy arrived, both requiring love and attention. She tried practicing during the day, but young children wanted to join in, and the puppy needed feeding and walking. Juggling it all became overwhelming.
After careful planning, she devised a routine that worked. She decided to play while the children were still asleep and before the puppy's morning walk. This new schedule fit perfectly. Even the dog would sit and listen, knowing his walk would follow soon.
Gradually, her playlist began to come alive again. She rediscovered her love for music, her pieces grew stronger, and she felt better prepared for lessons.
This week see if you can implement a practice routine that works for you?
